How to Draw A Cartoon Moon

Step 1

We’ll start things off simply as we begin this cartoon moon drawing.

The moon takes on various visual appearances based on its position relative to the earth, and in this guide, we will depict it in its crescent shape.

First, this moon will have a fun face design, and we will start this face with the nose. The nose is drawn with a simple rounded line pointing to the left.

Next, we draw the inner edge of the “body” of the moon. This is drawn with a curved line and goes behind the nose you just drew.

Once these details have been created, we can proceed to the second step of the guide!

Step 2

In this second step of our tutorial on how to draw a cartoon moon, we will draw the right side of the moon’s body.

To do this, we’ll draw another large curved line that starts and ends where the two curved lines you drew for the inside begin and end.

This results in a crescent shape with two pointed tips, as shown in our reference image.

That’s all you have to do for this step, and then we can move on to the third part of the guide!

Step 3

Now that the outline of the lunar body is complete, we can start drawing more facial details. In particular, we draw the eyes of the moon above the nose.

These consist of two oval shapes, each with a smaller oval shape inside. Then the inner oval shapes each have a big black dot inside.

Next, add another curved line to the right under the eye as a cheek.

Finally, you can round off the face by drawing two large curved eyebrows above the eyes. These will round out the print nicely, and you’re ready to tackle step 4!

Step 4

In this next step, we will complete the face details of your cartoon moon drawing! For this part, we will draw the smiling mouth of the moon.

First, draw a slightly curved line down from the bridge of your nose, and then lengthen it into a curved smile.

The top of the moon lip will also be quite pointed. The mouth will be open, and we will draw rounded lines for the tongue inside.

Finish with another simple curved line below the bottom lip, and you’re ready for some final touches and elements in the next step of the guide.

Step 5

Before we bring this moon to life with some stunning colors in the last step of this how-to draw-a-cartoon moon guide, we will first add some finishing touches to finish it off properly.

Once we’ve added these details, feel free to add some of your ideas for additional details!

We added several small oval shapes to the moon’s surface for our design. Each has a simple border inside to make them look like holes in the surface.

Each will also be surrounded by tiny lines that add extra depth.

Once these have been added, feel free to add any additional details! You could pick up many fun ideas, from drawing stars in the background to adding some alien spaceships.

Step 6

This is the last step of this tutorial, and we will finish with some colors! In our reference image, we show you a range of colors that you could use to complement the moon.

We used shades of yellow for the moon’s surface to give it a nice glowing look.

By using darker hues for specific areas, you can create a shadowy look that makes the moon appear a bit more dynamic.

Do you think you’ll try to emulate what we did in our example, or do you have other colors that you think you’d rather use?

You’re also welcome to try different artistic tools and mediums, so have fun getting creative and see what happens!
