Flue gas desulphurisation is a process of controlling the emission of sulphur oxide and other acidic components like hydrogen chloride from the exhausted flue gases off the fossil-fuel power plants. Limestone helps in cleaning these flue gases. Reportedly, more than 90% of the flue gas desulphurisation system capacity installed in the United States uses lime or limestone. United States’ major sources of sulphur dioxide, a toxic gas which is part of a larger group of chemicals called sulphur oxides (SOx), are emissions from industrial processes, for instance, electricity generation, boilers, petroleum refining and metal processing. Further, diesel engines and diesel- based equipment also add up to this. The most efficient removal is achieved by wet scrubbers, owing to their new designs, by around 90%. However, the COVID-19 led supply chain disruptions which halted manufacturing activities, led to a restricted market expansion.
